A: The Opal's water source will depend on the water you supply the unit. The water hardness must be less than 12 grains per gallon. You can use the scale inhibiting filter to help with reducing the solidification of scale within the ice maker, elongating time between maintenance while also removing bad flavors, chlorine and VOCs from the water.

Q: Is the ice bin cooled on this model to keep the ice frozen or does it melt if it is left sitting?

A: The ice bucket is cooled, but it does not freeze. This icemaker is designed to melt the unused ice after a certain period and start producing more ice to ensure that you always have the freshest ice available.

Not happy
After a day of use the ice maker started to make whining sounds. After a few days it was graining and ice production got cut in half.

Very Disappointed with this Ice Maker
When you first prep and connect the ice maker, everything works great. It makes ice quickly and cleanly. The problem starts as soon as it fills up the bin for the first time. Then there is a horribly loud screeching noise coming from inside the machine. Even if you turn it off, it still makes the noise. The only solution is to unplug it. After reading several online recommendations to try and fix the issue, it still makes the noise. I leave it unplugged for 24 hrs, plug it back in and all is good, until the bin fills up for the first time, then the screeching is back! I've done all the cleaning and prepping that the manual suggests but still makes noise. Now it's just a large paperweight on my kitchen counter. Very disappointed.

DO NOT BUY - this ice maker will stop working within a year. Even following their rigorous cleaning cycles, only using bottled water, and paying extra for their premium filter, the device has failed - making a horrendous screeching noise until it shuts off (or we can't take it anymore and shut it off ourselves), making it unusable. Their support service forces you to descale over and over and refuses to accept liability for their defective design. First had issues with the motor within 6 months. If you are considering buying this product - ask yourself whether it's worth the price considering it may last less than a year.

We really love this machine. It will continuously make pellet ice as long as it has water. Easy to clean and maintain. Great design. Love the programmability of the unit so it won’t run when don’t need it to (overnight).

Overpriced
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My first ice-maker began making loud screeching noises and was out of warranty so they did nothing. This new one is a lot louder when making ice and it leaked a lot of water when retrieving ice. Overpriced in my opinion.

Great when it worked
Burned up after only 6 months and was happy with it until it just went bad. Make sure the water is filtered coming into the unit

Great Ice Quality and Quantity
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This ice maker has been great. We keep it on 24 hours a day and it keeps a fresh supply of ice available at all times. Any ice melting goes to the bottom of the reservoir and is recycled into new ice. A fresh supply of ice is generated to replace any ice that is melted, so the ice supply is virtually always constant. The side tank makes it very easy to make sure that the ice maker never runs empty, and the system is designed so that water can be added without stopping the ice maker.

LOVE!!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love this ice maker, the side tank adds so much volume of water that I don't have to fill it daily now, just about every 3-4 days. The ice is amazing to chew, it only took about ten minutes before ice started accumulating in the bin too. It's a beautiful countertop design and it was easy to set up a schedule via wifi connection. I am a happy customer so far!
