A: No, LEGO® set 21358 will not work without a coin because its internal mechanism is specifically designed to be locked until a coin is inserted and pushed down. Inserting the coin releases a latch, allowing the handle to turn and dispense a minifigure. The set comes with two coins specifically for this purpose.

Wow!!! Perfectly engineered joy
The minifigure vending machine blew away my expectations. What a fun build! There is 11 bags total, I didn’t time myself but you can do this fairly quickly. Within half a day. I went a little slow during the main mechanism because I really didn’t want to have to go back and re make anything. I think this set is a good mix of mechanical & easy going building. It’s not very challenging for a parent of any skill level. It was a little intricate for my 10 year old. It functions better than I thought it would. The coin doesn’t get stuck often but sometimes the minifigures sit a little tight against each other and then you can’t turn the handle. It’s very easy to clear these types of jams. My kids had fun with this and I believe this vending machine really is a memory dispenser, even for the younger generation. Highly reccomend this as a display set for your family household. It’s the perfect size too for not taking up too much space. The only thing that almost made me remove one star is the included minifigures. I was surprised to learn they were fan voted. The classic spaceman for example has been in retail rotation for over the last decade ever since Benny the spaceman in the Lego Movie was introduced. Everyone has a lot of variations of this minifigure. And then each minifigure in this vending machine set has a paired friend. So you get another identical spaceman. I did expect more fun and unique minifigures but that’s personal preference. We are going to replace some of the ones in the machine with the minifigures we’ve made at the lego store that represent each family member. Overall though this set is a must buy. Especially at the retail price, it’s worth it. Don’t wait for the secondary market increased price.

Amazing Fun
This has to be my favourite ever LEGO model and I have hundreds. I’ve been building since childhood. I’m now in my 60’s and display my MOCs at LEGO shows. The internal workings and structure were great fun to complete. The fact that the mechanism runs so smoothly is a testament to the expertise of your designers Even I, as a fully grown adult, can happily feed the tokens into the slot, turn the handle and be thrilled with my minifigure. The rattle and rumble of the balls as they mix around and tumble through is great. For further play I put generic LEGO minifigures in it so grandchildren can take them home. Christmas, Halloween and other themed sets go in for use according to models being created. If you can only get one set this year, make it this one. A super build experience and never-ending play opportunities when finished.

Eye Catcher if there ever was one!
I got this set for myself to spruce up my work space, and goodness it is amazing. The engineering that went into the crank (requiring a coin too) to get the capsule is just unreal. Me and my son (11) love to just do it over and over and over. The minifigure selection is phenomenal as well. Definitely a very unique set, and a great building experience!
