In 2026, the rules for the iPhone 17 Pro Max are very consistent, but there is one major "trap" to avoid. 1. If you buy from the Apple Store (apple.com) Yes, it is unlocked. Whether you pay in full or use Apple Card Monthly Installments, the phone comes unlocked from Day 1. The T-Mobile/Verizon/Boost Exception: Even if you choose one of these carriers during checkout at Apple to get a special deal, the phone still arrives unlocked. The AT&T Exception: This is the only "trap." If you buy from Apple but choose AT&T Installment Plans (financing through your AT&T bill), the phone will be locked to AT&T until the device is paid off in full. 2. If you buy from a Carrier (Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T) No, it is usually locked. AT&T & T-Mobile: The phone is locked until you pay it off completely. For T-Mobile, this can sometimes take up to 365 days of active service. Verizon: They have a unique "60-day rule." Even if you are still paying for the phone, Verizon automatically unlocks it 60 days after activation, provided your account is in good standing. 3. If you buy from a Retailer (Best Buy, Target, Walmart) It depends on the "Flex Policy." Most iPhones sold at big-box retailers are "Reseller Flex" units. This means they are unlocked in the box, but they lock to the first SIM card (eSIM) you activate. If you want a truly unlocked phone from these stores, you must specifically buy the "Universal" or "Unactivated" model at full price. How to verify if your 17 Pro Max is unlocked: If you already have the phone in hand, you don't need to guess. Just do this: Go to Settings > General > About. Scroll down to Carrier Lock. If it says "No SIM restrictions," your phone is fully unlocked and ready for any carrier or travel eSIM. A Note on eSIM Remember that the iPhone 17 Pro Max (U.S. models) does not have a physical SIM tray. It is 100% eSIM. Good but Apple needs to do better

Disappointed in features, nothing groundbreaking with the 17max pro. I actually liked the camera better on my 15pro. Better life is excellent as is the color.

Great but still need some work.

Great but still bugs. When I use things like iTunes and certain apps it lags. I’m most times always on WiFi, and it did the same thing on my 14 plus. So really it’s not the phone but the apps and bugs in the phone it’s self. But beautiful phone nonetheless. I’m grateful to have it.
