Die Räuber ist das erste veröffentlichte Drama von Friedrich Schiller. Das Werk, das zunächst nicht als Bühnenstück, sondern als Lesedrama gedacht war, gliedert sich in fünf Akte und entstand in der Epoche der Aufklärung und ist der Strömung Sturm und Drang in der deutschen Literatur zuzurechnen. Es wurde 1781 zunächst anonym veröffentlicht, dann am 13. Januar 1782 in Mannheim uraufgeführt, wo es für nationales Aufsehen sorgte und Schiller schlagartig berühmt machte. Das Drama schildert die Rivalität zweier gräflicher Brüder: auf der einen Seite der von seinem Vater geliebte, intelligente, freiheitsliebende spätere Räuber Karl Moor, auf der anderen Seite sein kalt berechnender, unter Liebesentzug leidender Bruder Franz, der auf Karl eifersüchtig ist und das Erbe seines Vaters an sich reißen will. Zentrales Motiv ist der Konflikt zwischen Verstand und Gefühl, zentrales Thema das Verhältnis von Gesetz und Freiheit. Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805), 1802 geadelt, war ein Arzt, Dichter, Philosoph und Historiker. Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten deutschsprachigen Dramatiker, Lyriker und Essayisten.
