About the Book

A social history following the football career of English-born, Scottish-raised footballer Arthur Dixon who played during the 1940s and 1950s.

Book Synopsis

Arthur Dixon's football career took him from Glasgow amateurs Queen's Park to success on both sides of the Anglo-Scottish border. There was even flirtation with international honours. He played with and against some of the finest players of his era. Later, as a coach and physiotherapist, he helped support the development of the next generation of stars.

Arthur's grandson Scott follows Arthur's journey from his wartime debut in 1940 to his decision to leave football and take a 'regular job' in the early nineteen-sixties. The reader is returned to a time when football was a fundamentally different game. The ball was heavier, the kit was not a fashion accessory, and highly restricted wages meant the sport offered no path to untold riches. Arthur's story offers a fascinating insight into the life of an aspiring footballer in wartime and early post-war Britain.
