It's very cute. Yes, the shelves are plastic, but you can't tell. It was very easy to put together. You only need a screwdriver. Pull the shade ring up from the inside of the shade and pull it up toward the clips. Yes, it's a little unstable if you try to put heavey items on it; it is obviously not designed to put heavy duty things on it.

Defective screw
I like this lamp with the shelves, gives just the right ambience to my office. Yeah, it would've been nicer if the shelves weren't plastic and maybe if it was a little taller. But my biggest problem was that one of the connecting screws was too thick and I had to improvise to keep going. I'm sure Target would have made it right, but I already had it half-put together. Just wish they would've done like some other companies and include one extra of each screw in case I lost one (or one was defective).
