About the Book

Zing! Zap! Plop! Through lyrical text, this visually stunning nonfiction book traces a drop of water from cloud to aquifer, from underground stream to marsh, from lake to river, from ocean to strait, past icebergs and waterfalls and beaches, until finally back to cloud. Backmatter and glossary provide additional facts.

Book Synopsis

Zing! Zap! Plop! Gray clouds gather. One drop of water waits. Thunder rumbles. Down to the earth the drop plummets! Through crashing lightning and rumbling thunder, the reader embarks on a journey through the water cycle with a single raindrop from the sky. Told through lyrical text, this visually stunning nonfiction book traces a drop of water from cloud to aquifer, from underground stream to marsh, from lake to river, from ocean to strait, past icebergs and waterfalls and beaches, until finally back to cloud. Accompanying the story are small pieces of information that are woven into the text every few pages identifying terms and facts. At the end, a glossary of terms and accompanying illustrations provide readers with a more detailed understanding of the water cycle. The water cycle is an important topic in early understanding of science, specifically physical geography. One Drop provides the youngest of students the opportunity to grasp simple terms and facts while enjoying the journey of the main character in the story, the "One Drop". Educators will enjoy reading this story to younger students at the start of a unit on water cycles, and older students will be able to utilize the additional information at the end of the story to craft science projects and essays for submission in fairs and other events in school.

About the Author

Kaitlin Sikes lives in Northeast Florida, near the Saint Johns River. This unusual river that flows north made her wonder...with no nearby mountains, where did it come from? And where was it going? The answers revealed unexpected global connections. Kaitlin is passionate about writing books that inspire wonder and loves searching for those stories alongside her husband and two children. When she isn't writing or exploring the natural world, she works as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. One day, she would love to visit the beautiful places featured in this book.
