Toxic Smell
I have never left a target review before even though I'm a regular shopper, but this rug was so bad that I needed to share. I should have read the other reviews in depth before purchasing - the smell is horrendous. It is not a natural jute smell. I have extreme chemical sensitivity so I can quickly identify things that are harmful to our health - mold, endocrine disruptors, chemicals, etc. Many reviews mention it smelling like mold - maybe their products had mold but that was not my experience. There wasn't any mold smells, since I can quickly pinpoint mold after my previous mold toxicity illness, but there was very strong chemicals of some kind. I immediately got really dizzy and felt like crying for no reason which is what happens from strong chemicals for me. I had planned to sprinkle with baking soda & vaccum the next morning, spray with EC3 & white vinegar / water for the odor, but decided it's way too risky & not something I'm comfortable exposing myself & my family to. I quickly returned it. Try the Threshold's Jute Diamond Area Rug or Safavieh's Montauk MTK701 Flat Weave instead that are Oeko-Tex certified & all natural fibers. I'm still waiting on the Safavieh to arrive but I found the Threshold Jute Diamond in store & there's 0 toxic odor(:

Tried to air out this rug, but to no avail. It smelled of moldy dirt and was so bad I could smell it through the plastic when it was delivered. Rugs USA has not refunded my money from the prompt return.

Horrible mildew smell. We own a larger version of this rug and the exact same size I just ordered (2X3) both without smell issues. Not sure what happened in this case, but there are two recent reviews describing the same issue, Nov 24 and Dec 2, 2025. We are very sensitive to mildew in our home. Very frustrating to encounter and now I have to return it.

Toxic odor
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We ordered a 9 x 12 & 6 x 9 jute/cotton rugs for our bedroom. Hired a mover to lift the king size bed and sofa and place the rugs. There is a toxic chemical odor that persists after 8 days. We have installed fans and opened windows. We have not been able to use the bedroom. We tried to make this work but now we are calling customer service. Terribly disappointed. We ordered same rug for upstairs bedroom and there was no odor.
