Book Synopsis

Every society has a vested interest in forming a healthy sense of masculinity in its young men. Yet ours has done the opposite. Reacting to the sins of past men, we haven't reformed masculinity; we've attempted to destroy it. We've declared it toxic and called for its destruction. In response, men's participation and interest in religious worship, marriage, and public life have drastically declined over the last half century.

Where do men go from here? Is there a way out of this crisis? What is the image on which we should model our masculinity?

The way forward is not rejection, but rather, renewal. If men are to flourish, they must have a clear, renewed vision for authentic masculinity. Taking human nature in one hand and Christian revelation in the other, New Adam contemplates the God-given charisms of men and asks how those talents, dispositions, and strengths might be harnessed for the kingdom of God.

Authentic masculinity is not a toxic force to be feared or erased. It is a divine reality worthy of our respect.

Review Quotes

"Few books speak so boldly. John Bishop confronts the serious questions about masculinity and its counterfeits with biblical insight and theological depth. Rooted in Scripture and tradition, illuminated by lived experience, he paints a vivid picture of authentic masculinity. I recommend New Adam to men of every age and vocation -- from husbands and fathers to singles and celibates." -- Scott Hahn, Father Michael Scanlan, T.O.R., Chair of Biblical Theology and the New Evangelization at Franciscan University of Steubenville

" In a moment where the question of masculinity is a critical topic for churches and church leaders, Dr. John Bishop's voice has, for years, consistently been a thoughtful and needed addition. New Adam is an enormous contribution to one of the most culturally significant conversations of our time. It should be read widely by men in the pews and church leaders alike!" -- Tim Glemkowski, CEO of Amazing Parish

" John Bishop is an outstanding teacher who is in tune with the aspirations and struggles of Christian men today. In this book, men searching for direction will find inspiration and wise guidance to help them navigate the challenges and uncertainties of modern living as they strive to become the men God made them to be." -- Edward Sri, theologian and Sr. Vice President of Apostolic Outreach at FOCUS

" Many books leave the reader inspired but few simultaneously answer the inevitable question, 'How do I live this?' John Bishop brilliantly and unapologetically lays out the history of masculinity while inspiring me to (intentionally) become a better Catholic man, husband, father and Knight of Columbus because that is who God has called me to be. This book is a must-read for any Catholic man who strives to live contrary to secular society and be a witness to our faith in all circumstances." -- Damien O'Connor, Vice President of Evangelization and Faith Formation at Knights of Columbus Supreme Council

" The fruit of years of research and extensive field-testing in ministry to men, this powerful book offers Christian men a way forward out of cultural and personal malaise. Simply put, men are called to more. More than what the culture tells them they are or can be. More than the sin that ensnares them. This book offers a vision of Christian masculinity that is both powerful and practical. Full of stories, examples, and action steps, this book will inspire and direct men to conform themselves more closely to the New Adam. Highly recommended." -- Dr. John Grabowski, Professor of Moral Theology at The Catholic University of America
