Lush fantasy with amazing characters and world-building
I really loved We Hunt the Flame. It is a well-written fantasy inspired by Middle Eastern culture. The world building is skillful, the magic system fascinating, and the characters complex. The land of Arawiya once vibrant and flourishing, has lost its good magic, has become cursed and suffers under a cruel Sultan. Zafira is the legendary Demenhune Hunter who masquerades as a man to brave a dark, treacherous forest called the Arz so that she can feed her people. The Arz is invading Arawiya, threatening to destroy it. Zafira is offered the chance to venture to a mysterious island in a quest for an artifact that will restore good magic to her land and defeat the Arz. Nasir, the Sultan’s son, an assassin who does his bidding, is tasked with using Zafira to find the artifact and then kill her. They are joined on the island by other characters, with their own, at first, mysterious agendas. I liked all the characters and watching how their relationships grew and changed. I loved Altair and Kifah. There were some quite unexpected twists. Lush descriptions of the setting, people, clothes and food abound. The romance was slowly developed and did not dominate the story. I am grateful to have read this right as the sequel is published so I don't have to wait. Highly recommended.

A beautiful start to an Arabian-inspired fantasy duology
- 4.5 Stars - "We hunt the flame, the light in the darkness, the good this world deserves." Zafira is the Hunter, a girl who disguises herself as a man. She travels regularly to the mysterious and dangerous forest of Arz in order to hunt for her village. When she gets the chance to get rid of the Arz forever by retrieving a magical artifact, she decides to go to Sharr, a mysterious and deadly island. Meanwhile, Nasir, the prince of Arawiya, is also sent to Sharr, but he is sent by his father with orders to kill the Hunter and steal the artifact. "A life without purpose may be no life, but a life without love is nothing but an existence." We Hunt the Flame features a fantastical Arabian inspired world with a veeeeeeeeery slow-burn romance. Things I loved: - As others have mentioned, Hafsah Faizal's writing is BEAUTIFUL. It's lyrical and absolutely entrancing. - I loved all the characters! (even though some of them frustrated me a little bit because of their stubbornness) - World-building was great in my opinion, though I was a little confused with all the information thrown at me in the first section of the book. Things I disliked: - There were some parts of the book that I felt were a little less engaging (though most of the book was pretty fast-paced and interesting). - As I mentioned before, I felt that the world could have been introduced a little better in the beginning as it was a little difficult to understand at first. I definitely recommend this book to those who love fantasy and/or books with flowery writing. I really enjoyed this, and am so excited for the release of the sequel! A Breath of Fresh Air
This book is a stunning reminder of what ownvoices authors can do. It was such a refreshing take and the world she has built is so lavishly and lovingly described. Not only does Hafsah take tropes commonly found in YA fantasy, but she molds them into her own and makes them *better*. Tropes are always described as "stale" and "overdone" as soon as BIPOC authors get a hand on them, but if you can push aside your preferences for mediocre white authors, you would be able so see what a gem this book is and how it furthers the conversation on what marginalized groups bring to literature, even we aren't writing Issue books.
I'm looking forward to re-reading We Hunt the Flame in preparation for it's sequel We Free the Stars!

Middle eastern inspired fantasy !
I adored this book and loved reading the Arabic! I also think Zafira and Nasir are destined to be together but I don’t know if we will get a wedding in the sequel! I’m so excited to see how the sequel wraps things up and a little terrified.

I was super fortunate to receive an advanced reader copy of We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal from Fierce Reads at C2E2! HUGE thank you to Fierce Reads for this amazing arc! First I have to mention the absolutely gorgeous arc cover of We Hunt the Flame. I love the official release cover, but look at how stunning the arc edition is! I love it so much! Much like the cover, We Hunt the Flame is a gorgeous masterpiece! We Hunt the Flame is an incredible debut from Hafsah Faizal. I loved everything about this story and I can’t wait to read more from her. We Hunt the Flame is an epic fantasy adventure full of political intrigue, mystery, a slow-burn romance, and feminism. It is set in a beautifully created world and narrated by two main characters, Zafira “The Huntress” and Nasir “The Prince of Death.” Both leads are written so well — they each have a history and backstory that shows the reader how they have become the Huntress and the Prince of Death. Faizal was able to do this without information dumping! Zafira and Nasir both experience huge growth and development throughout their journey. They both must confront their emotions, past traumas, and inner demons. The journey changes both for the better which brings them closer. I liked that the change wasn’t immediate or easy. Zafira and Nasir truly had to go on a journey – both physically and emotionally. Side note – the cast of side characters was also so good! Each character was very well done and added to the story. The story takes place in the world of Arawiya. There is a ton of history and culture in this world, but as I said earlier, it felt natural and not like information dumping. Arawiya is a nation made up of five caliphates (or states). Magic has disappeared from Arawiya and left a curse throughout the land, including the forest of darkness known as the Arz and the island of Sharr. Although it is a place, Sharr was a character on its own. It was all encompassing and had its own personality and desires. I haven’t read a lot of books where the setting/world is an actual character. It really elevated the story and showed how talented Faizal’s writing is. I can’t get over the writing of We Hunt the Flame. Hafsah Faizal is able to create lyrical, poetic, and enchanting words that flow perfectly together to craft a wholly original story. Faizal’s beautiful writing is incredibly lush and descriptive. This world and setting is super detailed and intricate, but still completely captivating. The intense detail didn’t seem overwhelming and actually added to the beautiful setting. I truly saw the world that Faizal created. I was on the journey with Zafira and Nasir. My ONLY complaint/suggestion is that a glossary would be nice. I did need to pause to look up some of the Arabic words in order to better understand some scenes. I can’t say enough good things about We Hunt the Flame. I feel like a lot of YA fantasy blends together lately, but not Hafsah Faizal’s masterpiece. We Hunt the Flame starts off a bit slower, but kept me pulled in the entire time. The ending is full of reveals, twists, and cliffhangers. I cannot wait for the rest of the series! One of the best enemies to lovers arcs in Fantasy!
"Strength must be seized." I needed this message this week.
If was being truly critical, I'd rate this a 4.5 only because out of 3 (arguably major) plot twists/reveals, I was able to predict 2 of them quite early - but I'm not being critical, because this didn't detract from my enjoyment of the writing.
The ending is also a bit cliffhanger-y and I wanted some more resolution but obviously, this didn't affect me because this story actually made me slow down and repeat my listening of the audiobook and re-read lines in the version on my e-reader to highlight certain quotes and savor the narrative experience. I stretched out reading this over 3 days when I certainly could have finished it in 2.
Upon finishing it, I pre-ordered the second book, forthcoming in January, We Free the Stars . I bought it NOW and it comes out in JANUARY 2021. I rarely ever do this. Most of what I read I first borrow from the library, and then decide to purchase if I truly love it.
Plus the romance here is done SO well - I love these characters. They're believable and so is their love - even if they won't admit it yet in words to each other! This to me, is a love story between two introverts and I adore that.
There are a lot of familiar elements I love in this story, but that’s precisely why I enjoyed it. Although in my mind there are winks and nods to other YA/fantasy/romance tales, this one is written solidly, it feels delightful to see it unfold.
Faizal does a MASTERFUL enemies-to-lovers slowburn. This story is so lush and mysterious, the characters and the setting and the magic, all of it.
