About the Book
A timely and insightful analysis of geopolitical rivalries and clashing interests in the Red Sea - one of the world's most important and disputed geostrategic areas.
Book Synopsis
The Red Sea is rapidly becoming a highly contested zone, where traditional and emerging global powers are vying for influence and control. In this book, Federico Donelli explores the dynamics of this new scramble for Africa, analyzing the interests, agendas, and threats of extra-regional players, with a particular focus on China and the United States. Using a range of International Relations theories, the book delves into the economic, geopolitical, and security issues driving this competition, including the strategic importance of shipping routes and the threat of terrorism and transnational crime. By examining the alliances and military presence of great powers in the region, Donelli seeks to predict the outcomes of this engagement and the impact it will have on the current and future global power balances. A must-read for scholars and policy-makers alike, this book offers a timely and insightful analysis of the rapidly changing security environment in the Red Sea.
Review Quotes
"Long neglected both in IR theory and in multilateral diplomacy, the Red Sea poses urgent challenges to global security. Federico Donelli provides a comprehensive account of this complex, marginalized fracture zone, where land-based conflicts intersect with a maritime security regime. This book is an essential guide to this volatile mix and the vexations of those grappling with it." --Alex De Waal, Tufts University, USA
"Donelli has produced a valuable contribution that enhances our understanding, interpretation, analysis, and explanation of Red Sea geopolitics. This important work will be of interest to scholars and practitioners in conflict studies, development studies, African studies, Middle East studies, international relations, and regional policy-making. I highly recommend it." --Redie Bereketeab, Nordic Africa Institute, Sweden
