Description

Book Synopsis

An entertaining, insightful, and revealing account of a man born into social prominence who dedicated his life to public service. A candid look behind the curtain at contemporary politics in the state and the nation.

The scion of a legendary department store family, Mark Dayton could have chosen any profession. He grew up in an environment of business savvy and social largesse, inspired by the belief that great privilege demands social responsibility and community commitment--a belief that led him to a life in public service.

In his own words, Perseverance tells Dayton's life story, from his childhood in a dysfunctional household to his political awakening, his early life in politics, and his friendship with Senator Paul Wellstone, whose call, "We all do better when we all do better," served as a lodestar for Dayton's ongoing work.

Readers follow Dayton from his first elected state office, to his time in the US Senate, to his two terms as Minnesota's governor. As pointed in his assessments of himself as in those of his colleagues, Dayton discusses mistakes as well as achievements. He gives credit where it is due, regardless of political affiliations.

The book ends with a postscript on our current moment in public life. In addition to providing an enduring record of recent political history, this memoir offers case studies of problems being remedied swiftly under leadership motivated by empathy. Perseverance provides occasion for conversations of consequence and substance, today and for years to come.

Review Quotes

"This memoir is not simply an account of campaigns or policy debates. It is a reflection on the meaning of public service itself. It is about the discipline of showing up, the humility of listening, and the responsibility of never losing sight of the people you serve. Mark Dayton's story is a reminder that progress is possible when leaders are guided by empathy." --Hillary Rodham Clinton, from the Foreword

"Mark Dayton's life has been defined by compassion, integrity, and courage, and that's exactly how he led Minnesota during his long career in public service. From expanding access to health care to raising the minimum wage, Mark delivered on his promise to improve people's lives and to build 'A Better Minnesota.' Whether you're a Democrat, Republican, or independent, Perseverance is an essential read for anyone who wants to better understand Minnesota and the man who played such a pivotal role in shaping it for the better." --Amy Klobuchar, US Senator from Minnesota

"In Perseverance, Mark Dayton gives us a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at a political life defined by contradictions, challenges, and ultimately great meaning. I was delighted by his insider take on national events as well as funny and charming tales about Minnesota politics that made me laugh out loud. As Democrats grapple with what is next for our party, the story of how this Midwestern populist fearlessly challenged the status quo, delivered for the people, and won Minnesota's heart is a must read." --Tina Smith, US Senator from Minnesota

"In this candid, searing reflection, former senator and governor Mark Dayton, 79, shows that his rare combo of high-IQ wonk, chippy hockey goalie, and anti-war activist remains intact. He regrets "not a cent" spending his inheritance on his candidacies for economic and social justice. Behind the scenes, he reveals, he waged a decades-long struggle for emotional and physical health. Perseverance, indeed. Minnesota is better for it." -- David Lillehaug, former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice

"Mark Dayton's memoir captures the career of one of Minnesota's most remarkable public servants. I was fascinated by Mark's personal candor as well as the breadth and depth of his aspirations for Minnesota. More than anything the book reconfirmed what I know about Mark. He is a leader of great integrity--a person who acts in conformance with his beliefs even at the risk of losing friends or the support of his party. Mark's courage of conviction has always distinguished him." --Kathleen Blatz, former Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice

"As a Minnesota businessman who interacted with Mark on multiple topics over a number of years, Perseverance rang true to my experience. As reflected in the book, Mark was clear-eyed about defining problems yet willing to collaborate in discovering solutions. Mark writes, 'I forged a very different path from today's dominant politics. I have always said that there are no saints in politics, only shades of sinners. But there are shades, and they do matter.' To borrow his words, Mark was a 'shade' of the leader that we needed." --Greg Page, former Chairman and CEO of Cargill, Inc.

"In my interactions with Governor Dayton it was always clear to me that he was doing what he thought best for Minnesota. That same fidelity to principle and commitment to his community comes through loud and clear in this book. We can learn much about the value of public service from the governor's memoir, and these lessons are perhaps more important now than ever." --Lorie S. Gildea, former Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice

"I served in the legislature while Mark Dayton was governor, and while our political philosophies couldn't be more different, our friendship has always been a point of pride for me. In Perseverance, Mark brings the same humor and humility to the page that he brought to the capitol. From family stories to the grit of a political career, this is a fascinating read that reminds us there is always more to a person than their party platform." --State Senator Karin Housley

"Governor Mark Dayton's story, as documented in Perseverance, should be required reading in our high school civics courses, mandatory for political science students, and highly recommended for anyone aspiring to serve as an elected official in Minnesota. He recognized the honor and gravity of serving as both the Governor of Minnesota and the Commander-in-Chief of the Minnesota National Guard. Every decision he made in that role reflected a deep concern for the impact on soldiers, airmen, their families, and employers. Governor Dayton's legacy is one of humility, passion, and authentic servant leadership. His story is truly an inspiration for anyone who aspires to make a positive difference in public service." --Rick Nash, Lieutenant General (Bvt.) USA, Ret., 30th Adjutant General
