The openings are designed to allow water to flush through the brush head tube, and to also allow air inside. This venting ensures the brush head dries sufficiently after use and also reduces moisture inside the tube. Our Oral-B products are made of non-organic material and would not expect for their to be mold. We believe what you may be seeing is a build up of dried up toothpaste residue. The best way to prevent this is to thoroughly wash your toothbrush after each use by rinsing your device while it is still on. Then turn off your device, and rinse both pieces separately. Next, dry off both pieces separately using a dry cloth, and allow it to fully dry before reattaching and storing.
