The papers collected here are deigned to evaluate this hypothesis through a detailed analysis of the major national leaders during the events of June-September 1982 in Lebanon, which began with the Israeli invasion of Lebanon and culminated in the establishment of an international peace-keeping force in West Beirut.

BARBARA KELLERMAN is Dean of Graduate Studies and Research and Professor of Political Science, at Fairleigh Dickinson University. She is the author of All the President's Kin and The Political Presidency: Practice of Leadership and editor of Leadership: Multidisciplinary Perspectives, Political Leadership: A Source Book and Women Leaders in American Politics (with James David Barber).

JEFFREY Z. RUBIN is Professor of Psyhology at Tufts University and executive Director of the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School. Among his books are Dynamics of Third Party Intervention: Kissinger in the Middle East, Racial Conflict: Escalation, Stalemate, and Settlement (with Dean G. Pruitt) and Entrapment in Escalating Conflict (with Joel Brockner).
