EXCELLENT
This book is phenomenal. Because it’s free verse, it’s a pretty quick read. The imagery is so vibrant, I felt so drawn in to the story. For a book about the Vietnam war and refugees, it’s not very graphic. I’d say 9 or 10 and up would be a good age guideline, depending on the child of course. Emotionally it’s a difficult book to read; as someone born and raised in the USA, there was a lot of internal discomfort I had to sit with. In a lot of ways. But in a way I think we all really need. It’s eye-opening but in a way that doesn’t feel judge-y or condemning or belittling of anyone. Just incredibly honest. I think this is a beautiful book, I think it would spark important discussion, I think older children and even adults would enjoy it. At some points yes it’s difficult to read, but there’s also a lot of joy, there’s goodness, there’s hope, there’s losses and wins, there’s laughter and tears. TLDR: Heartbreaking, beautiful, needed. Highly, highly recommend for kids and adults alike.
