Tarnished after one week of wear

I bought this necklace at the end of October & saved it for a stocking stuffer Xmas gift ~ and after just one week of wearing it (and not getting it wet) ~ it is already tarnished ~ I was expecting it to last longer then one week ~ it is unfortunately past the window for return so I will have to eat the cost.
