Book Synopsis
Gain deeper insights into Christian de Chergé's search for God in community.
Christian de Chergé was the prior of the Trappist community of Our Lady of Atlas in Tibhirine, Algeria, until his assassination with six of his fellow monks in 1996. Drawn from the last two years of his life, these chapter talks to his brothers offer deeper insight into the monastic search for God in community during tumultuous times. These talks are a treasury of inspiration for those interested in Benedictine spirituality, and a valuable source of reflections on Muslim-Christian relations to accompany those who engage in religious encounter in a pluralistic environment.
Review Quotes
"God for All Days offers readers a privileged glimpse into the spirituality of Christian de Cherge. The volume's beauty lies in this intimacy: readers come to know a monk whose love of God necessarily involved his love of neighbor. Readers will also come to appreciate Cherge's pastoral concern for his small monastic community." Theological Studies

"God for All Days offers us the first, book length taste, in English, of the writings of Christian de Chergé. His chapter talks nudge monastic and ecclesial teaching in fresh ways and open a window into the thinking behind the community's decision to stay alongside their Muslim neighbors during the Algerian civil war. Matthew Cheung Salisbury and Jennifer Rushworth deserve our thanks for translations which faithfully convey the flavor of Christian's 'speaking notes, ' and for their helpful commentary. This book is a welcome step in making more of the writings of the Tibhirine community available in English. More please!" The Rev. Dr. Jane Foulcher, Charles Sturt University -- (12/4/2024 12:00:00 AM)
"De Cherge's chapter talks will be a source of inspiration to anyone interested in Benedictine spirituality. They may also be a resource for those who engage in interreligious dialogue or who are simply curious about Islam and its place in our pluralistic environment. I felt that I was standing on holy ground. Highly recommended." Spirit&Life

"Christian de Chergé tells his community that they have taken a vow of permanent catechesis, and this valuable book allows us to share in that. He addresses familiar monastic themes: stability, silence, lectio, and much more, with a compelling urgency. This is rich material, made all the more poignant, since we know the end of the story." Esther de Waal, author of The White Stone: The Art of Letting Go-- (11/20/2024 12:00:00 AM)
"Christian de Chergé took seriously his duty as abbot to provide his brother monks with substantial input on a wide variety of topics. His notes from hundreds of informal teachings in chapter are a window into his mind and heart. The selection of talks presented and translated here give us privileged access to the reflections that nourished Christian and his brothers in the years leading up to their final self-offering." Fr. Elias Dietz, Abbey of Gethsemani -- (11/15/2024 12:00:00 AM)
