Effi Briest ist ein Roman von Theodor Fontane. Beschrieben wird das Schicksal Effi Briests, die als siebzehnjähriges Mädchen auf Zureden ihrer Mutter den mehr als doppelt so alten Baron von Innstetten heiratet. Dieser behandelt Effi nicht nur wie ein Kind, sondern vernachlässigt sie zugunsten seiner karrierefördernden Dienstreisen. Vereinsamt in dieser Ehe, geht Effi eine flüchtige Liebschaft mit einem Offizier ein. Als Innstetten Jahre später dessen Liebesbriefe entdeckt, ist er außerstande, Effi zu verzeihen. Zwanghaft einem überholten Ehrenkodex verhaftet, tötet er den verflossenen Liebhaber im Duell und lässt sich scheiden. Effi ist fortan gesellschaftlich geächtet und wird sogar von ihren Eltern verstoßen. Das Werk gilt als ein Höhe- und Wendepunkt des poetischen Realismus der deutschen Literatur: Höhepunkt, weil der Autor kritische Distanz mit großer schriftstellerischer Eleganz verbindet; Wendepunkt, weil Fontane damit zum bedeutendsten Geburtshelfer des deutschen Gesellschaftsromans wurde, der wenige Jahre später mit Thomas Manns Roman Buddenbrooks erstmals Weltgeltung erlangen sollte. Thomas Mann verdankt Fontanes Stil zahlreiche Anregungen. Auch der Familienname der Buddenbrooks aus Effi Briest. Heinrich Theodor Fontane (1819-1898) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller und approbierter Apotheker. Er gilt als bedeutendster deutscher Vertreter des deutschen Realismus.
