Book Synopsis

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Centuries pass, and Mexico City still has fascinating places that captivate us. Karla Ceceña, underground chronicler of this city, guides us through streets, gardens, bookstores, and unexpected buildings to enjoy unforgettable atmospheres and corners full of history.

The Charm and Mystery of Mexico City discovers the unforgettable Quixote Fountain in the Chapultepec Forest and offers clues to trace the origins of the Gothic Chapel of the Hellenic Cultural Institute; it lifts the veil on the House of Masks, in San Cosme, to delve into its legend, and accompanies us to the dawn of the Plaza de Santo Domingo. It also shares an unforgettable sunrise in Xochimilco and a magical walk through Los Dinamos.

Written with wisdom and nostalgia, this book renews our view of the City of Palaces and invites both those who love it and those who do not know it yet to let themselves be carried away by its history and mystery, to discover, among other wonders, the importance of the National Canal in Churubusco, as well as the spectral beauty of the La Niña Oscura bookstore in Santa María la Ribera, and the origin of the curious name of the one near the Villa de Cortés metro station: Bajos Pensamientos.

Karla Ceceña guides us through the San Fernando book bazaar in the Guerrero neighborhood, shares the story of the woman who created what is now the Colegio Nacional, and dazzles us with the secrets of the Exconvento de Culhuacán and the Historical Archives in Iztapalapa. Her work captivates and, at the same time, reflects on the spell cast by this terrible, beautiful, and imposing city in this turbulent 21st century.
