Q: I'm repotting a lot of houseplants, would the regular potting soil or houseplant potting soil be better. The regular comes in a larger bag but is it better to get the houseplant specific bag?

submitted by Katie - 1 year ago
  • A: I recommend the potting soil. I’m doing outside work too and thought I could sneak by with top soil. I did use the potting soil last year and preferred it for pots.

submitted byElizabeth - 1 year ago
  • A: Is this well draining soil?

submitted byHannah - 6 months ago
  • A: Hi Katie! We recommend using which soil would work for each specific plant since different plants have different needs. If you have any questions or would like further help deciding, please reach out to us at contact@backtotheroots.com.

Q: Do you think this is a good organic soil for cat grass? My cats are picky and don’t approve of all soils.

submitted by REE - 3 months ago
  • A: Hi Ree! Our Organic All-Purpose Potting Mix can work for cat grass; however, it contains poultry litter, feather meal, and sulfate of potash, which some cats may be sensitive to. Another excellent option is our Organic Coconut Coir—when mixed with a bit of Organic Perlite, it creates a light, fluffy soil that many cats love. If you have any questions or need help choosing the best soil for your kitties, feel free to reach out at contact@backtotheroots.com. We're always happy to help!

Q: Hi. Is this soil good for strawberries and peppers?

submitted by Chy - 5 months ago
  • A: Hi Chy! Yes, our Organic All-Purpose Potting Mix is a good choice for both strawberries and peppers. It has a neutral pH, which works well for most plants, including these two. Strawberries generally prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5–6.5), and peppers do well in a pH range of 6.0–7.0, so this mix provides a solid base. Just be sure to provide plenty of sunlight and consistent watering for best results!

submitted by kermit - 6 months ago
  • A: Hi there! Great questions — our Organic All-Purpose Potting Mix is not OMRI certified, but it is certified organic through OIM (Organic Input Material registration) in California. It does not contain coconut coir, and the full list of ingredients is on the back of the bag. Amazing water retention and healthy looking plants

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was needing to repot 3 of my houseplants and decided to use this Back to the Roots Better Potting Mix. 45 days later my plants are looking amazing. There is no mold, and the water retention is great, in fact I have found that I need to water them less and they look healthier than ever!

Rich, high-quality soil.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Back to the Roots “Better” Potting Mix is an amazing soil. The texture and rich nutrients made a noticeable difference—my aloe plants are thriving compared to when I used other potting soils. I also love that the soil is blended in the USA. You can really tell the quality as soon as you use it.

Great soil

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We love this garden soil. We've used it for years. It's very nice and great for above ground garden beds. The texture of the soil is great that allows water flow to reach even the deepest roots. Doesn't become hard or compact. The bag is easy to carry to wherever you need soil.

Green thumb

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The mix is a good consistency but the product was a bit clumpy and very dry in some areas as far as consistency goes. Did show signs of some white maybe decomp in it. Maybe I’m wrong and it is a mineral but I used it for some little trees as well as some apple seeds that I’m winter sewing. Thus far so good but the real test will be how the plants like it.

Planet friendly

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love that it’s organic and made with natural ingredients like compost, perlite, and peat moss with no harsh chemicals or synthetic additives. It has a clean, earthy smell (not sour or overly strong like some mixes), and it was easy to work with straight out of the bag.

High quality potting soil

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used this product for one of my house plants but really excited to try it with my vegetable plants in warmer weather. Love that it’s organic since I’m trying to live a cleaner life. The soil itself is very nice and after a few weeks I’m happy that it still looks like it did when I first planted

Soil Gnats

I was disappointed with this purchase. When opening I saw some gnats and continued planting my houseplants. It ended up with a soil gnat infestation and I chose to trash my houseplants because I could not get rid of it. I'll purchase another brand next time.
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 20 days ago
Hi there! Hi there — we’re really sorry to hear about your experience and understand how frustrating fungus gnats can be. They’re unfortunately very common with all potting soils, as they thrive in moist organic matter, and can appear even after planting. That said, we never want this to disrupt your gardening or lead to lost plants. If you’re open to it, photos of the front and back of the bag are always helpful for us to troubleshoot in the future. Please feel free to reach out to us at contact@backtotheroots.com with your receipt — we’re more than happy to offer a replacement or a refund for your soil purchase. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, and we truly appreciate you giving us a try.

Great organic potting soil

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This soil is great. It has a good weight to it and provides good drainage while being peat free. It doesn't seem too clumpy or compact and has a good texture. It seems like it works well for indoor and outdoor plants. I love that it's organic and has earthworm castings. I will be getting it again in the spring for my garden.

Good organic safe product.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this product for my honest review, this soil is a little chunky in texture but drains well and has no mold build up. I will use this next year for potted flowers. Seems to have good airflow while retaining moisture.

GNATS!

Gnats! I thought I was going crazy, but this bag of soil had fungus gnats in it. I initially thought they were random when I opened the bag until I repotted my plants and they are infested with them.
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 28 days ago
Hi Erin! Thank you for sharing your experience, and I’m really sorry to hear about the frustration this caused. Fungus gnats can show up in any brand or type of potting soil because they’re naturally attracted to moist, organic environments where plants grow. Even with careful processing, they can occasionally find their way into sealed bags, especially if conditions during shipping or storage were humid. We’d love to take a closer look and make this right for you. Could you please send us photos of the front and back of the soil bag to contact@backtotheroots.com? Once we receive those, we’ll be happy to help you with a replacement and make sure you’re taken care of. Thanks again for letting us know, and we’re here to help every step of the way!

Great blend

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received the Back to the Roots organic potting mix in exchange for an honest review. I’ve got a ton of indoor plants and many needed repotting before winter. I tried another popular soil mix and found that it held too much water giving my snake plant root rot! I repotted what was left in this soil mix and it’s on the path to recovery. This is a great mix including plant food and yucca extract. I think in a few months my plant will be thriving.

Light, clean potting mix that drains well and keep

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I really enjoyed using the Back to the Roots “Better” Potting Mix. The texture is soft, light, and easy to work with, which made repotting my plants super simple. I love that it drains well without drying out too fast, and my plants seem to really thrive in it. I also appreciate that it doesn’t have that strong, earthy smell some potting mixes have. It feels clean, fresh, and good quality. Overall, it’s a great option if you want something that helps plants grow healthy and strong.

Organic Mix That Retains Moisture

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Soil stays nice and moist after being opened. No clumping or rustiness. Even consistency and good airflow. Holds moisture well after watering and I think will be best for outdoor gardening. The combo of nutrients and components in the mix seems like it will keep your plants hearty even in the hottest climates. Overall there is a good weight to the soil and no noticeable odors. This will be my go to for repotting.

nice organic dirt

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Overall this was quality dirt. When I first received it I had placed it in my shed and it must have had eggs in the dirt because the next day the shed was full of large horse flies. That was a downside, however the dirt seems decent and its organic which is fantastic. I was concerned about flies so I potted plants that will remain outdoors. Im not sure I would recommend it for indoor plants for that reason but Im looking forward to a good harvest.
