Helmut Bley konzipiert die afrikanische Geschichte als Agrar- und Sozialgeschichte. Die Großregionen Afrikas werden in ihrem historischen Kontext und ihrer Dynamik von der vorkolonialen Zeit seit 1800 dargestellt. Um Anschaulichkeit zu gewährleisten, werden in die Schilderung der Regionen Geschichten von einzelnen Personen, Dörfern und Städten sowie Ethien exemplarisch eingebettet. Im systematischen Teil analysiert Bley die Gewaltverhältnisse vor, während und nach der Kolonialherrschaft, außerdem die Grundstrukturen der Ökonomie, insbesondere in der Periode der Weltwirtschaftskrisen 1920-1922, 1929-1938 und 1966. Analysen afrikanischer Autoren werden dabei vorgestellt und mit Gesamtdeutungen zu Afrika in der Weltgeschichte verknüpft.
