Q: How are you supposed to use the candle with the screw in it? No screwdriver I have fits and I stripped the screw. This seems like a wasteful practice.

A: I called the number at Target and was told there is no information with them to remove the screw :(
submitted byRK - 1 year agoA: I used a precision screwdriver and gently unscrewed the same. This got the screw out enough to remove the battery compartment lid. To get the screw to come completely off, I gently applied a pull holding the screw’s head using a plier and kept unscrewing it at the same time. This worked for me!

You Get What You Pay For
Welp, the tiny screw for the “try me” button wouldn’t loosen at all so I had to MacGyver it open and take the base out and switch it with another base that wasn’t working. Broke the “try me” candle doing so. Not happy. Took me forrrevverrr, but I ended up with 3 of the 4 candles functioning properly.

Amazing candles, but the test one is a massive hassle to activate
The candles are truly wonderful and bring a warm, natural looking glow to the room. However, the one candle attached to the test button has a tiny screw that is impossibly difficult to remove (tried multiple screwdriver bits that did not work). Ended up breaking the screw with a nail clipper, breaking some of the plastic around it and forcibly tearing off the "door" to the battery case (!!!). This test button is truly not worth the hassle, unless the maker simply removes that unnecessary screw. Stressful fight. The four candles are now functioning properly, but please consider changing that one aspect of the product.

Don't buy. Awful quality. One of three candles in each box we bought has a screw that is so cheap it instantly strips when trying to remove it rendering the candle useless.

The screw is to make the product safer for those who might be at risk (i.e. children) to access and remove the battery. We understand that this may have presented a difficult situation when the screw is damaged when trying to remove, and we apologize for any inconvenience. The easiest way to remove the screw is with a number 0 or 1 Phillips screwdriver with a tip width of 2.5 mm to 3 mm. You want to make sure that the screwdriver has good edges and has not been stripped or worn down. Once you have opened the port and removed the button cell battery the product is safe for general household use, and the screw can be discarded as it isn't necessary for the device to function. If you are still having a difficult time removing the screw, there is a chance that the threaded hole for the screw was damaged on assembly or that there is debris in the threads. To remove it, you can try over-tightening the screw by turning it clockwise, and you should be able to feel it getting easier to turn. Then, place one finger on the latch over the door to the battery port, press in to disengage the lock and gently pry up on the door while turning the screw counterclockwise. Once the door is removed, remove the battery and dispose in accordance with local regulations. Place the battery port door on a surface that will not be damaged by the screw point. Put gentle downward force on the door and turn the screw head with the screwdriver counterclockwise, and the screw should start to back out of the threaded hole.

Seeing a brief preview of the split candle was not worth the trouble of the screw. Please redesign this. I seriously had to break the candle bottom and was using precision screwdrivers, but they still stripped the screw. Otherwise the candles look nice!

Screws impossible to remove
Adding to the complaints that the microscopic screw on the bottom is impossible to remove. First 3 came out ok, last one wouldn’t budge and ended up breaking the candle. Waste of $35

Littke screw is a true problem
Nice candles BUT I spent a great deal of time getting the #%+*! little screw out of the fourth candle. I also bought a glasses repair kit which didn't work and then a small screwdriver kit ($12) which eventually worked, but it wasn't easy! So unless you have lots of patience and the exact type of screwdriver needed, you will only have three candles!

Trash packaging!
Packaging is horrendous. I’ve never had to fight against opening something so bad in my life. The screws strip and are unusable. Returned.

Nice Candles for a Good Price
I didn’t think I was going to like these candles and even considered returning them without opening them. BUT I did open them and I really like them!! The color of the glow is nice and warm without being too yellow and the flicker effect is well executed. I can’t speak to longevity but first impressions are positive. As to the usability of the tester candle…. It does take a few minutes. You will need a tiny micro size Phillips head screwdriver — I have one in my household tool bag; you could also use a tiny screwdriver made for eyeglasses — and then you can easily remove the screw which holds the battery cover in place. Once that is off you must then remove the tiny 2-wire adapter that helps the testing mechanism work. This will come out with a good tug. Once that’s out you can insert your batteries and you’re good to go!

Cozy automatic lighting
I love these candles! I bought 4 packages and put the candles around my house. I set them for the 5 hour timer and they all automatically turn on every 19 hours and run for 5 hours and automatically turn off. Very ADHD friendly! The light is warm and helps during the dark months. One package had a tight screw and I took it to the tool lending library to get it out.
