Excellent review women in Egypt late 19th century
It's amazing what women can do when they band together, even through different generations, to make a mark on the world. This one had to do with early Egyptologists, who seemed to come into their own after seeking the warm, dry, Egyptian weather for health reasons. They then became enamored with the ancient Egyptians and their culture. I enjoyed the content, although it was at times, dry and very academic! Almost like an expanded paper for a class in Egyptian Archeology as seen thought women's eyes. The detail the author put into this work is amazing. Footnotes for much of the text, and I would have LOVED to have the photos in the ARC I received! I read this book in fits and starts. It wasn't one that I could rush through. Most of the time I really needed to sit down and take in all the information! Other times I would read for an hour or more and not have the story become redundant and jumping around to people who hadn't been introduced yet. This was not my normal read, but I was interested in the topic, found the stories enlightening, and am so glad someone has given the women who began this effort a venue. Most importantly, I learned something! From the beginning of the study, told about in this book, of Egyptology in 1882 and the end of the British hold over Egypt in January 1952, this story covers the happenings in Egypt and the study of Egyptology as told through the descriptions of the women who were there.
