Run WAY too large -- possibly 2 or 3 sizes too large

I normally wear an XL or XXL, and bought an XL as they appeared very loose. The XL would NOT stay up on my waist 😆 I tried wearing them for a couple of hours and it was exhausting pulling them up every five seconds. The material is very soft and a good weight, however the elastic waistband is VERY thin and not strong enough to support the fabric weight. Not only does it not hold the pants up, but it stretches out like crazy. I might try a medium because I LOVE them, other than the sizing. For context, I normally wear pant sizes 14-16.
