ON THE MONEY
THE HUGUENOT CONNECT by PAUL CR MONK first edition 2018, a review of book 1 MERCHANTS VIRTUE...reviewing book one because I don't think I'll read the other two books. The year is 1685 and Louis IVX had decided to abolish the Protestant religion in France making the country a unified Catholic only sovereignty, regardless of the earlier Edict of Nante. Jacob and Jeanne Delpeche are caught in the middle of the struggle as they vow to remain faithful Huguenots. Merchants Virtue is historically and religiously detailed but Paul Monk has painted a word picture that seems flat and at times, dull. A good writer will paint a vivid picture by making the reader own the story, to feel like he or she is a part of the action. One way this is done is by using something we call "show, don't tell". To me, the story feels like Monk is a reporter standing on the sidelines but I want to be immersed in the story. Merchants Virtue did not do that for me. There are also some editing faux pas in the story (like not capitalizing Rue or Place). Paul, I hope you see this review.
