Description

Book Synopsis

Bringing his unmistakable eye to a lively collection of anonymous snapshots from the collection of Lee Shulman, Martin Parr assembles a loving, nostalgic portrait of British life in this thoughtfully selected photobook.

Drawn from a trove of vernacular photographs, this book gathers candid views of British life in the postwar decades, from seaside holidays and backyard gatherings to birthday parties, day trips, and domestic rituals.
The images capture people at ease--posing, laughing, squinting into the sun, and absorbed in the small pleasures of everyday life--with an immediacy that feels both familiar and disarming. Guided by Parr's editorial eye, the photographs are shaped into a lively visual sequence that reveals patterns of dress, leisure, class, and habit, bringing humor and affection into sharp focus through the images themselves.
The photographs are saturated with color, with exquisite reproductions that preserve rich hues, subtle fades, and tonal quirks, maintaining the distinctive look of mid-century color photography. Thoughtfully edited and paced, the selection transforms intimate moments into a collective portrait, offering a generous and observant view of Britain as seen through the unselfconscious lens of its own family albums.

About the Author

MARTIN PARR was a renowned British documentary photographer,
photojournalist, and photobook collector, best known for his vivid, satirical, and often humorous images that explore themes of consumerism, class, leisure, and British culture. His landmark photobook The Last Resort (1986) stirred debate in the photographic world for its bold style and unapologetic portrayal of British life.

LEE SHULMAN is the founder and creative director of The Anonymous Project, an international archive devoted to collecting and recontextualizing anonymous amateur photography. For the last two decades he has worked as an award-winning filmmaker both in the UK and France.
