Long metal pieces attached to the book

Came with long metal pieces hanging out of it. I figured it were the staples they used to bind the book together but how do you miss this. Bought this for my 9 month old grandson cause it's his 1st Christmas. Obviously there is no quality control. How could this have even been considered acceptable to ship.

As cute as the original Poky Little Puppy

Our grandchild has suddenly become enchanted with the Poky Little Puppy. I'm delighted to find so many stories about him, and am happy that Little Golden Books are printed in the USA.
