My Favorite Camera... best IQ, DR, and Color
This camera is legendary.... I am regularly astonished at how beautifully it renders images, especially in challenging lighting conditions. Yes, AF is a bit slow, but set the camera in DMF and you're good to go. Noise-free images, great rendition, superior color.... THE BEST!

Outstanding IQ, though slow AF, need EVF
The Sony RX1R camera is one of my all-time favorites, with excellent image quality, outstanding dynamic range, a superbly integrated Zeiss 2.0 prime lens that has beautiful rendition and microcontrast. The only downsides to the camera are 1) slow AF, esp. in lower light conditions, 2) poor battery life, and 3) the need for an external (hot shoe) EVF which will set you back another $400 or so.

Very Happy
This was my Christmas gift to myself. A very good camera. I would have purchased the newer model if it had a small fill flash. I am liking the detail from a full frame camera.

Good but seriously flawed
I was looking for a compact, full frame carry-everywhere camera, and the Sony seemed to fit the bill. It's well built (but not weatherproof, sadly) and is capable of excellent results. The main downside is that it is very slow in low light and the focusing can be frustratingly hit and miss.

The type of compact camera I always wanted
The RX1-R is the camera I always wanted, but was never made before. I always wanted a "no holds Barred" SMALL camera that offered all the features that the big SLR/DSLR had but were too cumbersome to have at hand on a routine basis. Like fast lens for low light and/or shallow depth of field, large Full fame sensor, built in flash plus hot shoe for key additional options. full auto mode to manual options. Many special effects. As the saying goes... "The best camera is..." the one you have with you to capture the one in a life image. Pros: A well built all around great camera. Cons: None really, there is no Perfect camera. some might wish to have had a removable lens (dust problem) then get one of Sony's Alpha7 series models. If you do some serious soul searching, you'll realize that most of you photos are/were taken with a single lens, most likely the prime kit lens that came with your camera. I upgraded my multi- lens NEX-7 for the RX1-R, finally realizing that in the past 50 years 90% of my images were with a prime lens. My telephoto and wide angle lenses stayed home or in the camera bag. Wish it was cheaper? Yes, the same could be said concerning certain top of the line watches or cars....

I like the camera very much, but not on video mode
The camera is outstanding, I have RX-100 M2 , and I love it too.I love it a lot. But on video mod it is disaster. Can you do something to improve the quality of the video clips? Thx

Lacking in many ways...wish I could return it.
I've owned many camera both "point and shoot" and DSLR. I have the RX1R about 2 month now and have used it a bit around the world. I've used it in many light settings and all modes of operation. I gave it 2 stars only because of the huge picture size and the ability to produce a nice landscape photo of still items. The autofocus is poor in low light and moving subjects. The Canon S-95 I have outperforms this camera in all ways except image size. It's a shame that a 3000 dollar camera can't preform as well as a 500 dollar camera. Hopefully I'll find someone to buy it !! from me because I'm sure Sony won't take it back.

As a camera should be
First let me start my review by given everybody who’s thinking of purchasing the RXR1 how I arrived at my purchase. I started with cameras 1963, and owned two and quarter square roll film cameras and 35mm SLR cameras. Also did all my own developing and enlarging my black and white prints. So with fifty years being an amateur photographer and having owned many cameras, have always known the joy of being able to set a camera up with or without a light meter. These are the most important things to me which made me choose the RXR. My priorities were a camera which a viewfinder could be use and yes I have the FDA-EV1MK any concerning photographer would not be with one. The Zeiss lens having used microscopes for years have not found much too equal Zeiss plus all cameras fitted with Zeiss lens have given superb results. I went for a fixed lens because I found for landscapes, close up of plants and portrait this was ideal, when I did own different lens in the past I found I never needed to carry extra lens. I have had a cable release cable since 1963 and I am glad I held on to it because the RXR1 has a thread in the shutter release button which I may add works. If I have any gripes it’s the flash design while I understand the position when it’s activated is high to clear the lens when being use, the assembly feels flimsy. Also the socket for charging and downloading data could be more robust, but saying that there is no perfect camera we all find the design of the camera we own does not meet our individual needs. One thing would have been nice to have a professional developing software instead of the play memories you have to download to.

Amazing Camera
I bought this camera whilst on holiday in the US. I have always used full frame cameras and am totally amazed at the quality of the pictures on this camera. The size and weight are superb and the depth of clarity just unbelievable. A real winner in my books for the amateur and professional alike.

Where have you been all my life?
A wonderful camera. I know it's pointless to speculate what camera "someone or other" would use if he were alive today, but I really think that Cartier-Bresson would have been tempted by this. This is the camera that his company of choice have yet to come up with. Small, beautifully built, versatile, inconspicuous, silent and excellent resolution. Alright, it has a 35mm fixed lens and C-B is supposed to have used a 50mm almost exclusively, but here you're the photographer not C-B.

Best photos taken in the palm of your hand..simple
Everything about this exudes quality. From the feel of the soft buttons, shutter to the heft of the full magnesium alloy body, they put thought into this camera, It's not just a luxury item, its for those who appreciate quality. It feels as if the CEO himself wanted this camera to exist. Its a no-compromise of quality camera system you can always take with you at the expense of compromising the features we're used to. Its not for full-on photography. It will however get you the best 35mm shot to exist.

Omission
I just purchased this camera, so don't have a lot to say as of yet. However, when I went to process the first Raw files from this cutting edge camera, I was disappointed to find that Sony has not yet released the RAW support file needed for Mac-based computers and photo editing products. They have one out for Microsoft operating systems, but not for Mac OS. Guess they haven't realized that a high percentage of their customers are using Macs. Hope they correct the problem in short order.

Simply Amazing
This camera deserves much praise however, it comes with some frustration. The good: The IQ is mind boggling. It's better than any full frame DSLR I've used. The handling is great and the layout of the controls leaves little to be desired. The camera feels great and it reeks of precision. It is unobtrusive and it rarely causes a second look unlike a big DSLR. It's small enough that it can be a constant companion. Mine lives in my daily backpack. The 35mm focal length is ideal. The external articulated ELV is great. Some feel it should be built in. Those same people might complain that the camera is to large or wish for an articulated ELV. I like it the way it is. Also, the camera is dead quiet. The (not real) bad: the lowlight performance is excellent but the lowlight AF is compromised. My Olympus MFT has better lowlight AF. I typically revert to MF with peaking for lowlight close ups. The battery life is short but it's to be expected when considering size. A bigger battery means a bigger camera! The raw + JPEG only gives a med JPEG. The cost of accessories is high, if you don't like it make your own. The wish list: An articulated touch screen, IS & dust/moisture proofing. Buy this camera if want a high precision compact camera with a mind boggling IQ. If you can afford it, don't hesitate, just do it.

Excellent Quality
Although it is pricey, the quality and features on the camera are so phenomenal. I had just received my Sony RX1R a week ago and the quality of the images are distinct and capture great detail. I am not a professional photographer or an individual in the graphic arts industry, however it really doesn't take much skill to observe high quality work and innovation. I am just a regular college student that will be using this product for my future endeavors. I would recommend this product for beginners interested in utilizing their skills in photography.

almost perfect
This is a very high quality camera , lens, and sensor combination capable of state of the art 35mm digital photography. The electronic viewfinder is a must have accessory as is a lens cap, but the Sony cap is ridiculously expensive and there are good alternatives. In fact, a lens cap should be included, and the packaging should be upgraded to reflect the high qualities of the camera. I would gladly purchase a fixed lens moderate telephoto version, say 80-90mm, because the lens sensor combination is likely to remain superior to any interchangeable lens version.
