Description

Book Synopsis

This volume is dedicated to a range of CDMA and MC-CDMA transmission aspects of systems designed for communicating over fading wireless channels.

Currently, a technical in-depth book on this subject, which has a similar detailed exposure of the recent advances in CDMA, M-ary CDMA and MC-CDMA, is unavailable. A further attraction of the joint treatment of these topics is that it allows the reader to view their design trade-offs in a comparative context.

Divided into five main parts:

Part I: provides a detailed introduction to the subject of CDMA systems designed for employment in various application

Part II: deals with the currently hot topic of genetic algorithm assisted multiuser detection

Part III: gives a detailed account of new, reduced-complexity M-ary CDMA schemes

Part IV: considers a range of novel MC-CDMA schemes which have the potential of supporting numerous design objectives

Part V: provides an overview of the 3G wireless system proposals and characterises the expected network capacity gains attained with the aid of adaptive CDMA systems

By providing an all-encompassing self-contained treatment this groundbreaking volume will have appeal to researchers, postgraduate students, academics practising research and development engineers working for wireless communications and computer networking companies, as well as senior undergraduate students and technical managers in the field.

From the Back Cover

Since the standardisation of 3G systems significant advances have been made in the field of CDMA systems. The next generation of wireless systems is expected to support a wide variety of multirate services, while achieving an increased spectral efficiency, a high bit rate and satisfying a range of many other demanding specifications.

This all-in-one volume reports on the entire body of recent advances in both single- and multi-carrier DS-CDMA as follows:

  • Presents a future-proof system design framework providing backwards compatibility with legacy systems
  • Features multiuser detection and interference cancellation, spanning the range of classic and avant-garde CDMA solutions, including genetic algorithm aided systems for blind data and channel estimation
  • Covers burst-by-burst adaptive CDMA and blind per-survivor aided CDMA
  • Details the entire body of joint coding and modulation aided CDMA, as well as adaptive space-time spreading
  • Explains both classic and radically new coded M-ary CDMA
  • Includes the body of knowledge on time-frequency spreading aided multicarrier DS-CDMA and code acquisition
  • Describes the existing 3G standards and cross-layer optimization aided adaptive modulation as well as beamforming assisted FDD/TDD networking

Such a comprehensive treatment of the subject will have wide-ranging appeal to researchers, advanced students and practising engineers working in wireless communications.

Review Quotes

"This book is particularly recommended for libraries in academia and industry that support programs or research in communications." (E-Streams, Vol. 7, No. 6)

About the Author

Lajos Hanzo received his degree in electronics in 1976 and his doctorate in 1983. During his career in telecommunications he has held various research and academic posts in Hungary, Germany and the UK. Currently he heads an academic research team, working on a range of research projects in the field of wireless multimedia communications sponsored by industry, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) UK, the European IST Programme and the Mobile Virtual Centre of Excellence (VCE), UK. Lajos is also an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer of both the Communications as well as the Vehicular Technology Society and a Fellow of the IEE.

Lie-Liang Yang received his M.Eng, Ph.D. degrees in communications and electronics from Northern Jiaotong University, Beijing, China in 1991 and 1997, respectively, and his B.Eng degree in communications engineering from Shanghai TieDao University, Shanghai, China in 1988. Since December 1997, he has been with the Communications Research Group at the Department of Electronics and Computer Science of University of Southampton, UK, where he held various research posts as a visiting postdoctoral research fellow, research fellow and senior research fellow. Currently holds an academic post as a lecturer. He is a senior member of the IEEE.

Ee-Lin Kuan received the B.Eng degree in Electronics Engineering with First Class Honours from the University of Southampton, UK. She was awarded the Ph.D. degree in Mobile Communications at the University of Southampton, UK. Her current research interests are associated with mobile transceiver designs with emphasis on adaptive CDMA techniques.

Kai Yen received the B.Eng degree in Electronics Engineering with First Class Honours from the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in 1996. In 2001, he was awarded the Ph.D. degree in Mobile Communications at the University of Southampton, UK.
