Review Quotes
An Indie Bestseller!
An Indigo Best Book of the Year!
The New York Public Library's Best Book of the Year
★"Themes of conservation and workers' rights sit comfortably alongside a story about being accepting and finding strength in community in this gleefully biting fable." -Booklist, starred review
★"A relevant and redemptive tale of hope in the darkest of times, with gregarious graphics to satisfy kids and a message to break even the most callous adult's bitter shell." -School Library Journal, starred review
"Stand aside, little mermaids. The true, pointy-toothed protector of the seas is here!... A scaly new hero sure to save the day--and to endear herself to readers." -Kirkus
"[E]xuberant cartooning from Beaton (King Baby) keeps this cheeky "Little Mermaid" variation swimming to a fish-friendly finale." -Publishers Weekly
"[A] picture of genuine ferocity and appealing silliness. There's a curriculum bonus here too, as the problem of overfishing is embedded both in the narrative and in the endpapers, perhaps sparking discussion of environmental and marine conservation." -BCCB
