It’s a cute toy that entertains our 18 month with its variety of songs, calling Sesame friends, etc. I do think it’s loud. I had to read other reviews to see if they were hearing the loud shrieking sound too. One review says it’s when the Cookie Monster piece is placed behind the Elmo phone and that is 100% accurate. It’s like awful microphone feedback that we all cringe at.

If you want to hear Elmo screaming with a microphone in his mouth. This is for you!
Speaker is terrible. Loud screeching sound constantly. Bought one, the speaker went on it. Thought it was just bad luck... nope! Bought it again and within 6 months it sounds like Elmo is eating the microphone it's so scratchy and constantly cuts out. Not worth your money at all!

THE WORST TOY EVER. If it’s on its back, or if the phone is up to the speaker it makes this extremely loud screeching sound. Do NOT BUY!

Not worth the money
My toddler desperately wanted this for Christmas, and we're low income, so this was her nice gift. The child cannot even use it as a phone, Elmo does all the talking. If you put the phone back, it will ring, so she would pick it up and say hello, but at the same time the phone talks, so she's left just listening to the toy talk to it's self, and got bored with it immediately.
