Q: Will this work on refrigerator/freezers?
submitted by Darcy T - 1 month ago
A: Thank you for your question. This Safety 1st Outsmart Flex Child Safety Lock was not tested for those types of appliances, so we would not recommend. There are locks available for appliances more specifically and we would recommend trying one of those.

Gets stuck after 1 to 3 openings, and then have to cut it off.
Bought this to keep my toddler from constantly getting into the fridge and leaving the door open. Worked fine when installing and 1 or 2 times after that, but later the same day, I went to put something in the fridge, and the button on top of it would NOT release the catch inside (the button on the bottom worked fine). It simply would NOT press at all! After about 5 minutes of trying to get this safety lock open, I had to cut it. Stupidly, I put a second one on after I got the stuff into the fridge. This morning, I had the same issue again as I was trying to get into the fridge to get my breakfast! That's two locks wasted. Just tried the one I put on the cabinet in the bathroom on the main floor, and it won't open either.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re very sorry to hear about the issues you encountered—especially having the lock fail in a way that prevented you from accessing your own fridge. We understand how frustrating and inconvenient that must have been, particularly when it happened more than once. This is certainly not the level of reliability we expect from a safety product. Your feedback is important to us, and we’ll be sharing it with our product team for further review. If you haven’t already, we strongly encourage you to reach out to our Consumer Care Team at 1-800-544-1108 so they can assist with a refund or replacement.

don't waste your time
I bought three and will be returning them all. The cabinet doors could still be opened several inches, plenty to get a hand in or pinch a finger. Within hours of installing two of the three (hadn't even taken the third out of the box yet) one of them jammed and we could not open our kitchen cabinet. The top button would not press at all. I marred up my new cabinet hardware, too, cutting this lock off of it. Do not waste your time on this one.

Jammed up on us
Hard for 2 grown adults to open, gets jammed, had to actually break it. Only bought it because our closet handles are too far apart from other types and we need to keep our cat out. Would not recommended

2/2 Busted DO NOT BUY
I bought one to put on our playroom door that has French doors. Within a couple months, it was stuck, and we couldn’t open it at all. We squeezed the top and bottom to no avail. We’d hear one side click open but the other would not. Finally I gave up and cut it. I figured it was user error so I bought another one, and the second one got stuck within a few weeks!!! What the heck!!!

I had to call the fire dept
Do not purchase this. I’ve bought 2. I had it on French doors together keep the dogs from leaving the room while I work out. The first one was great, until my dog broke it somehow. So, I bought another one. I put it on the doors before my workout. Then I tried to leave the room and was stuck. Like stuck stuck. I figured I was just at a weird angle. Nope! I’d opened the previous one dozens of times, so I knew I was doing it correctly. Naturally, I call my fire fighter husband. He’s at work an hour away and suggested I call the fire dept to bust me out. I was absolutely not doing that. I could imagine the “pregnant lady’s firefighter husband told her to call 911 to reduce her from a baby lock” jokes, yeah, no. Luckily one of said dogs has insanely long hair and I was able to use his grooming scissors to free myself, 3 dogs, and my phone on 7% battery. Needless to say, I will not be using this brand for my future baby proofing needs.

Worked great, lasted less than a month
Purchased two for cabinets that I didn't want to screw or adhere anything to. Less than one month later, one is working great, the kids haven't even tried to move them. The other is completely unuseable because 1 of 2 buttons won't depress, so it's locked shut.

By far my favorite cabinet lock
We almost all of the Outsmart line recently and this is by far my favorite lock. It fits great and works like a charm! The decoy button is perfect! The straps were a little stiff to work with at first but once I worked with it a little more it became easier. Very sturdy!

Works great and super easy to install!
My husband and I have tried a Myriad of different child locks/pulls etc. These have been wonderful. Super easy to install, they adjust to varied lengths to accommodate some oddly spaced cabinets. Very happy with them!

outsmarted my 2 1/2 year old
Love this anf my toddler has yet to figure out. So definitely a win with us. The decoy button throws him off every time. We had other childproofing in place that you had to measure and screw in place. ..little guy figured these out quick and 3/4s of them are already broke. So excited about these and that reach across the knows on cabinets. Definitely recommending to other moms

Very very useful
This fits amazing on our cabinet under our tv. It used to be my toddlers favorite pastime to open the cabinet and toss all of our movies onto the floor. This is no longer an issue thanks to the outsmart products. He tries his hardest to release with the decoy button but eventually give up. It's easy to open and close when we need but won't come apart unless you know what you're doing.

Great lock
This lock works well at keeping my toddler out of the kitchen cabinets. The decoy button is a great addition to this type of lock. Our side-by-side cabinets are at an odd distance and this lock was able to accommodate the knobs. Very easy to install and uninstall. Will definitely buy more

Going to buy agian for second child!
Loved these on my lower kitchen cabinets! I used them with my first child 7 years ago and plan on buying them agian for our baby on the way. Easy to use if you know how to open them. We had family members that couldn't get into the cabinets till we showed them :)

Much easier to use than the older one
I love this product! The old child locks for cupboards were so hard to install and a nightmare to use. I was afraid of that when I heard it was time to child safe g'ma's house but I was more than relieved once I saw how easy the products are to use! Way to go!

Great product!
This lock fits my cabinet perfectly and was very easy to install. I love how lightweight it is and how easy it is to un-lock and re-lock. Definitely recommend because they are easy for adults to open the cabinets when needed but are great at keeping kids out.

Kept my husband out!
My husband and teens couldn't figure out the hidden release! He ended up taking the cabinet door off the hinges to get to the laundry supplies! Works on my 3 yr old as well.

Easy to use
Love this however I found it difficult to open because of the spacing between my cabinet handles and the width of the button and the amount of space needed to separate the device to open it. But my son loved playing with the button trying to open the cabinets.
