Tucked away under stately trees in Euclid sits Our Lady of Lourdes National Shrine, a peaceful sanctuary steeped in history that draws thousands of people from around the world each year. The land was farmed by the Harms family, and in 1870, the Blessed Mother appeared to Julia Harms in the spot where a statue of Mary stands today. In 1926, a replica of the original Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine was built on the property, featuring a grotto with water flowing over a stone on which Mary stood when she appeared to St. Bernadette in Lourdes, France.

About the Author

Joanne Boresz has had a lifelong interest in writing and photography, and this led her to work as a volunteer camera operator and writer for several community news and cable programs. She was also associate producer for the documentary The Battle for Women's Right to Vote, which aired on PBS. She and her daughter, Jennifer, recorded, produced, and edited a promotional video for Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine in Euclid, Ohio, which is viewable on the Shrine's website. Joanne is a 4th Dan black belt in Taekwondo and has taught children's and adult beginner Taekwondo and Cardio-Fit Kickboxing classes. She was born near the shores of Lake Erie and has lived in Northeast Ohio all her life. She and her husband have two adult children, five grandchildren, and an assortment of pets. During her spare time, she enjoys family visits to Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine, watching old movies, and collecting beach glass along the lakeshore.

Jennifer Boresz Engelking is the author of Hidden History of Lake Erie; Lost Lake Erie; Lost Lake County, Ohio; and Hidden History of Lake County, Ohio. She is a Cleveland State University graduate and award-winning and regional Emmy-nominated writer. Jennifer has been published in magazines and newspapers, including Echoes Magazine, the News-Herald, and Lake Erie Living; was a reporter for several years at CBS stations in Toledo and Erie; and has written and co-produced historical documentaries that have aired on PBS. She even once played a reporter in the Tony Scott-directed film Unstoppable. Jennifer was born, raised, and still resides in Northeast Ohio, near the shores of Lake Erie, where she enjoys exploring nearby beaches, islands, and parks with her husband and three children.
