If the item weren’t incredibly heavy, I would return it. I’ve given two stars because 1) it says in this listing that you can use the wood countertop as a cutting board, but the first thing in the instructions is that it can NOT be used as a cutting board and that using it that way will degrade the island top. I previously had a smaller butcher block island and had seen this as an upgrade, so it’s annoying to not be able to use it. 2) As others have mentioned, the color of the wood is completely different to what’s shown in the photos. It’s stained a cherry and I wouldn’t have ordered it if it was shown as it actually is. 3) Target doesn’t tell you this but it ships in two enormous boxes separately from each other. I only received one tracking number so when I opened it and set everything up to put together, and realized the top was missing, I spent 40 minutes on the phone with Target support before they finally informed me a second package was coming, which didn’t show up for more than a week. Overall I’m disappointed and looking into having the top sanded and restained so that at least it looks pretty even if I can’t use it as planned.

This kitchen island is gorgeous and the top has a lot of room for appliances, canisters, etc. I'm not sure but my guess is that the top is made of rubberwood, which is a type of hardwood that is being used for furniture a lot these days. It has real weight to it like I would expect from hardwood. Count on at least an hour to assemble this. Assembly is pretty much on par with every other similiar piece of furniture that I've assembled over many years. Follow the directions and pay attention to the part that says to install the screws no more than halfway. This will give the legs enough flexibility to fit the top shelf into the area between the legs. If you try to put this together and cannot get the shelf to fit in the space inside the four legs, back your screws out a bit, making sure that they're still screwed in enough to hold things together, then try to attach the shelf again. I'm over 60 and assembled this myself. Having another person there to help will make assembly easier and bit faster. Finally, the care instructions provide do's and don'ts. Be sure to read them. For instance, it says not to use rubber on the top because it could discolor the finish. Better to know now than to find out later. Target got this to me quickly and it was in great shape when it arrived. I purchased this from Target because I wanted to avoid the bad experiences with shipping damage I've had with other major online retailers and because this is returnable at any Target store. That last part takes some of the hassle out of a potential return for me. Overall, great product and great buying experience!

Assembly was easy and it feels really sturdy. The wood also is nice. The only thing is the wood is a little more orange than brown shown in the photos, but overall pretty happy with it thus far.

Fits into any decor, well made. Functional. Ive bought two. One for each home i have. I added baskets on the bottom and use it as a wine rack, too!
