Lego Ninjago: Garmadon Volume 1 - by Tri Vuong (Paperback)

My daughter loved learning about more of the backstory of easily the most interesting villain in the ninjago world. With great art and compelling characters, she certainly enjoyed the book! I also appreciate the more nuanced depiction of a “bad guy.” The line, “just because you do bad things, doesn’t mean you’re evil” is a better world view than the black and white depiction of “good vs evil” you frequently see with marvel or DC media. This is especially important considering that not everyone grows up with “bandit” as a father figure. Sometimes we need stories about bad fathers so we can help some kids understand their own strained relationship with their father just a little bit more. My only real complaint is my daughter had a hard time understanding the flashbacks on the story and she didn’t like it when the bears were the bad guys (although she loved the redemption arc when they ally with them later) The story is slightly non linear, so younger or less capable readers may be challenged with that idea. Other than that, she loved the book!
