“The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity.” ―Xaden Riorson
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College―Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.
Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.
Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits―and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.
But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year.
Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College―and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.

This is the second book to the Empyrean series. It was more suspenseful and heart breaking. Nice twist at the end to save Violet. I can’t wait to see what Xaden’s future holds.

I did a pick up in store order for 4 collector's books. the order was ready quickly, however 2 of the 4 books had some damage to the sprayed edges (which is why I got the books), so that was disappointing.

disappointed in packaging
i would just like to say, this review does not reflect my feelings about the book itself - i love this series so much!! my low review is for how terribly it was packaged for delivery. both fourth wing and iron flame were thrown into a box with nothing to protect them except for a random piece of packing paper (that did absolutely nothing). thankfully fourth wing didn’t have too much damage to it, but iron flame was pretty beat up. the corner was bent and there was a black smudge on the edges. my husband went into the store to exchange it for a better one, but that defeated the whole purpose of me preordering them. it seems like a lot of other people are having issues with their books being poorly packaged as well. next time, i’ll probably just preorder through a different store.

Bent dust cover
I think this book is really pretty, but shipping sucked. my dust covered is pretty bent up. I was expecting them to try to protect the books but all they did was slap some paper in there and call it good😅 5 stars for how beautiful the book is, but beware of shipping.

Poor Quality
Does Target not have any quality control? Who is in charge of shipping out books because this is ridiculous. The first order of this book I received came in a box, but the book itself was sliced down the top and damaged. I ordered a replacement and this second book came vacuumed sealed in a brown paper package! Who ships a book in a vacuumed sealed package? All of the corners are bent and wrinkled, and the dust jacket is creased and wrinkled as well. There’s some weird glue or goo clinging to some pages, too. Won’t be ordering my books from Target anymore and don’t recommend that anyone else does either if you actually care about the quality of your books.
