Defective material and off color

My son loves the print of this sweatshirt, but the color does not look like the charcoal in the advertisement. I would call it a greenish/blue gray. Also, the sweatshirt feels rough, inside and out. It was pilled and was covered in little fabric balls right out of the package. It looks like an old or defective sweatshirt. I wonder if it was washed and returned. My son wants to keep it, but I think it is defective. A new sweatshirt is soft on the inside. This looks and feels old.
