Description
Book Synopsis
New technologies are becoming available for managing glyphosate resistant (GR) weeds and reducing their spread. GR crop technology has revolutionized crop production in the developed world and the benefits are gradually spilling over to the developing world. In order to sustain an effective, environmentally safe herbicide such as glyphosate and the GR crop technology well in to the future, it is imperative that the issue of GR weeds be comprehensively understood. This book provides such an essential, up-to-date source of information on glyphosate resistance for researchers, extension workers, land managers, government personnel, and other decision makers.
- Provides comprehensive coverage of the intensely studied topic of glyphosate resistant (GR) in crops
- Details the development of glyphosate resistance and how to detect and manage the problem in crops
- Helps standardize global approaches to glyphosate resistance
- Encompasses interdisciplinary approaches in chemistry, weed science, biochemistry, plant physiology, plant biotechnology, genetics, ecology
- Includes a chapter on economic analysis of GR impact on crops
From the Back Cover
Presents the latest technology and strategies for managing glyphosate-resistant weeds
Glyphosate-resistant (GR) crop technology has revolutionized crop production in many parts of the world, offering such benefits as reduced fuel costs and improved soil conservation; however, GR weeds are becoming one of the most pressing problems in crop protection, threatening the sustainability of glyphosate and GR crop technology. This book details the development of glyphosate resistance, offering interdisciplinary approaches for managing GR weeds and reducing their spread.
Glyphosate Resistance in Crops and Weeds features contributions from leading experts in the many disciplines needed to fully understand GR crops and weeds. The authors have reviewed and analyzed all the latest research findings as well as the latest technologies developed to manage GR crops and weeds. Coverage includes:
- Developmental processes of first and subsequent generationsof GR crops
- A separate chapter on the economic impact of GR weeds
- Strategies for effectively managing glyphosate resistance
- Regional management issues surrounding GR weeds around the world
- Genetics and genomics of glyphosate resistance
- Methods of testing for glyphosate resistance
References guide readers to the primary literature for further investigation of individual topics. A compilation of commonly used terms in herbicide resistance and their definitions is also provided.
With the productivity and health of croplands threatened around the world by GR weeds, this review of glyphosate resistance is essential for land managers, weed scientists, plant biologists, crop consultants, and agronomists.
Review Quotes
"The book provides a very useful review for researchers into GR crops and weeds, as well as to those involved in education and extension, and decision-making in the approval of GM crops. It exemplifies the complexities and consequences of resistance development in general." (The Journal of Experimental Agriculture, 1 October 2011)
"Features contributions from leading experts in the many disciplines needed to fully understand glyphosphate-resistant crops and weeds. The authors have reviewed and analyzed all the latest research findings as well as the latest technologies developed to manage GR crops and weeds." (Chemical & Engineering News, December 2010)
