Unique Setting and All Josie!
This book is unique in its setting but 100% quintessential Josie Quinn! The setting is a wilderness camp in the winter and Josie is there with a group trying to work through some mental health issues, along with a group of strangers there for the same reason and the therapist who organized the trip. Josie’s team is distant when one of the campers disappears and turns up dead, so Josie is basically on her own trying to survive in a winter wonderland without power and limited cell phone capability. I loved how the story switched between Josie at the camp and Noah trying to get to her, along with the underlying story that the two had a conflict before she decided to attend this retreat. Josie Quinn, detective extraordinaire, has to call on every internal gift she has for figuring out clues while also working on surviving the blizzard that engulfs them all. I loved the fast pace, the new characters who were introduced and the way that Josie methodically worked out the murder mystery. Josie called on the talents of her team remotely via cell when she could get a signal, but she was mostly on her own, so she is definitely front and center in this fascinating book of survival and police skills put to the test. There are red herrings and false trails all along the way, and those led me on a merry chase around the woods of Pennsylvania. I loved everything about this book, especially seeing how much love Noah and Josie share even when separated and how fierce and determined Josie can be. Great characterization, well developed and mesmerizing plot and a satisfying conclusion. One of the best Josie Quinn books out there and a must read for fans of police procedurals with a kick-butt protagonist who is as smart as she is defensive.
