Q: What will happen to my skin if I don’t dilute it? Will it dry me out?
A: Hi, thank you for contacting Dr. Bronner's! While you can dilute our Pure-Castile Liquid soap, rest assured that this is not necessary for all uses and mostly comes down to preference. For example, some may prefer just pouring a few drops into their hands for handwashing, and others may prefer to dilute our soap at a 1:3 ratio in a foaming pump. It's truly up to you and your needs. However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind when first getting started with our Pure-Castile Soap. Firstly, our soap is 2 - 3 times more concentrated than most soaps on the market; therefore, less is definitely more. Additionally, diluting our soap with water does reduce its shelf life because we do not add any harsh preservatives to our products. Generally, diluting with tap or filtered water results in a shelf life of about 2 weeks to a month, while dilutions with distilled water can last up to 6 months. Using distilled water can also reduce natural soap separation that may occur with hard water. Please keep in mind that we encourage cleaning your containers out thoroughly before refilling them with diluted soap to promote freshness from batch to batch. Lastly, it's important to note that our Liquid Soap does not work well with pump dispensers. We have tested a variety of pumps and dilutions over the years with little success. Inevitably, the very concentrated soap clogs the pump. We recommend keeping the soap in its original bottle and using just a drop or two for each handwashing. On the other hand, our Liquid Soap does works very well in foaming dispensers. Foaming dispensers “thicken” the soap with water and air producing a velvety cloud of soap. If you decide to use a foaming dispenser, make sure to dilute the soap at a ratio of 1 part soap to 3 parts water. Here are some suggested ratio examples: 8 oz. bottle = 2 oz. soap and 6 oz. water 12 oz. bottle = 3 oz. soap and 9 oz. water For an extensive guide on recipes and applications for our products, we highly recommend checking out Lisa Bronner's blog, Going Green with Lisa Bronner (https://www.lisabronner.com/), where she provides incredibly handy dilution cheat sheets (https://www.lisabronner.com/dilutions-cheat-sheet-for-dr-bronners-castile-soap/). Q: Why is it now called magic soap? I was just wondering.
A: Hi, Thanks for reaching out to Dr. Bronner's! With our recent label update, we did officially change the name of our Pure-Castile Soaps to be "18-in-1 Pure-Castile Magic Soap," removing "hemp" from the title. For the past few decades our company has been known as “Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps,” while our castile soaps have had the name “Magic Soap” in several international markets for quite some time. So, in many ways, this update to our name is a return to our roots! Our founder, Emanuel Bronner, himself started referring to his Pure-Castile Soaps as “Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps” following a 1973 Esquire article with the same title that profiled Dr. Bronner, his philosophy, and his products. The author of the article was inspired to call the soap “magic” because of its many uses as well as its unique label that spread Dr. Bronner’s message of peace and unity. We think there are lots of things that make the soap magic—but to name a few: it’s made with Regenerative Organic Certified™ ingredients, provides a rich lather that feels great on skin, and supports fair trade projects around the world! Emanuel used the labels of our superb ecological soaps to spread his message of unity across religious and ethnic divides, claiming, “We are All-One or None!” His mission and passion are an integral part of our brand's identity! Although he drew from many religious traditions, we are a company made up of people with diverse beliefs, and don't espouse a particular religion. As our labels go way back to our Emanuel Bronner, we also added a hand-sketched image of him to the first batch of our new labels as a tribute to both him and the message behind our Magic Soaps. That said, we do plan to leave the inside of our labels blank on future batches — as this hand-sketched image of Emanuel was just a limited run for the first batch of bottles. It’ll take a little while before this first batch of labels cycles out of stores, but you’ll start seeing the blank-inside version popping up before too long. Rest assured that this is solely an adjustment to the label/name of our soap, and we have not changed the product that you know and love in any way. However, if you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to let us know!
