Book Synopsis

New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong returns to Haven's Rock in Cold as Hell as Casey Duncan hunts down a dangerous killer during a deadly blizzard.

Haven's Rock is a sanctuary town hidden deep in the Yukon for those who need to disappear from the regular world. Detective Casey Duncan and her husband, Sheriff Eric Dalton, are starting a family now that they've settled into their life here. As Casey nears the end of her pregnancy, she lets nothing, including her worried husband, stop her from investigating what happens in the forbidden forest outside the town of Haven's Rock.

When one of the town's residents is drugged and wanders too close to the edge of town, she's dragged into the woods kicking and screaming. She's saved in the nick of time, but the women of the town are alarmed. Casey and Eric investigate the assault just as a snowstorm hits Haven's Rock, covering the forest. It's there they find a frozen body, naked in the snow. With mixed accounts of the woman's last movements, the two begin to question who they can trust--and who they can't--in their seemingly safe haven.

Review Quotes

Praise for Cold as Hell

"The wilderness surrounding Haven's Rock is itself a major character in the book, and Casey's approaching due date adds urgency to the plotline. For fans of strong women protagonists and Armstrong's Rockton series, of which 'Haven's Rock'" is a spin-off." -Library Journal

Praise for The Boy Who Cried Bear

"The Boy Who Cried Bear skillfully melds a village mystery with a high adventure and acutely explores its numerous characters." -Shelf Awareness

"Armstrong's new venture continues her Rockton tradition."--Kirkus Reviews

"For fans of procedurals with a unique twist!"--Book Riot

"Kelley Armstrong's Haven's Rock series keeps getting better and better. The Boy Who Cried Bear, the second book in the series, has a significant mystery along with plenty of suspense and atmosphere that keeps readers rapidly turning the pages."--Mystery and Suspense Magazine

"Few mystery series have enthralled me as completely as Kelley Armstrong's books set in the Canadian Yukon wilderness...This new 'town' is going to take us on quite an exciting ride, so get in at the start and buckle up. Armstrong is sure to provide many wild animals, strange residents, adorable dog antics and, of course, murders to solve."--Bookreporter

"Evocative... There is a kindness and sense of the underlying good of people that permeates Casey's musings throughout the series, in spite of the harshness of the setting and the fact that the books always involve pain, danger, and evil. The plotting is complex and engaging, and the pace picks up to a blistering speed at the end."--Reviewing the Evidence

About the Author

KELLEY ARMSTRONG is the author of over 50 novels in mystery, fantasy and horror. She believes experience is the best teacher, though she's been told this shouldn't apply to writing her murder scenes. To craft her books, she has studied aikido, archery and fencing. She sucks at all of them. She has also crawled through very shallow cave systems and climbed half a mountain before chickening out. She was born and still lives in Canada.
