Book Synopsis

This moving book about peace, understanding, and unity is based on the real-life World War I event known as the Christmas Truce.

It is cold and clear on Christmas Eve night in 1914. Suddenly, a strange sound pierces the darkness. Someone is singing a Christmas carol in German.

Francis Tolliver and his fellow British soldiers are holed up in muddy trenches along the Western Front. Their enemies--German soldiers--lie in wait just across a field known as "No Man's Land." As the Germans' carol ends, Tolliver and the other British soldiers sing "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." Soon carols are being sung back and forth. Then a figure emerges in the dark, carrying a small Christmas tree with lighted candles. The British and German soldiers slowly leave their trenches--and the war--behind to stand together in the open field.

This haunting story is adapted by award-winning songwriter John McCutcheon from his song of the same name. Henri Sørensen's traditional, full-color oil paintings reinforce the emotional power and dignity of the story. Back matter provides more information about the historical event, and a CD featuring readings of the story and recordings of "Silent Night" and "Christmas in the Trenches" is included.

Review Quotes

"The text is clear and lyrical. Sorensen's beautiful double-page spreads in sepia shades show the young men from the two sides celebrating together-with individuals just like them. Lengthy notes fill in the history and present an impassioned call for peace." --Booklist

"Sorensen's atmospheric oil paintings bring the miraculous night of peace to life with a wide, double-page spread that allows room to show many soldiers at once as well as the expanse of the battlefield." --Kirkus Reviews

The Christmas Miracle

This story begins in modern England, at the end of Christmas day. Two grandchildren ask their grandfather what his favorite Christmas was, and he tells them the story of the 1914 Christmas. He recalls that it was during World War I, The Great War, and it was raging. The young soldiers were living and fighting in the trenches. It was freezing, with frost on the ground, and the soldiers all knew they would be spending Christmas outside and miserable. Suddenly, they heard a Christmas carol sung by the German soldiers coming from their trenches on the other side of the field. The English soldiers answered back with a carol of their own. Before they knew it, hesitantly at first, the English and German soldiers came out of their trenches, and met each other in the field between them. With common agreement, they laid down their weapons and celebrated Christmas with each other. The Germans produced a small Christmas tree with candles, soldiers from both sides exchanged gifts of what they had like chocolates, and canned meat. The Christmas truce went on all through the night until the next dawn, when they returned to the war, and how they were before. But stopping the fighting, and celebrating Christmas together, was never forgotten by the ones there. This was a real Christmas miracle because it was based on a Christmas truce that really happened. Although this is a picture book for children, ages seven to ten-years-old, adults will enjoy this based-on-facts story. Gore is not shown, the one illustration of fighting is not in color, but the spirit of the situation is told. This five-star book makes it easy to learn an amazing part of history.
