Very much like my old-old version of this stove.
This is the modern version of a Mountaineer stove which we purchased back in the 1980s, and that has served us well on literally hundreds of river trips and camping trips. The new one is the same size, same wind windscreen and lid arrangements and same 20,000 btu burners. Slight changes in the arrangement of the knobs, and slightly different legs. Some comments have questioned the need for the high output burners but we have loved them. They are great when you need to boil pasta for 16 people or heat up a bucket of dishwater quickly. We even set it up at home when we are cooking something that needs high heat output. The gas control valves have always worked well and with a delecate touch we can turn it down to a simmer. The cooking surface is large enough for a couple of large pots/pans and if more space is needed the windscreen wings can be unlatched and swung away. Overall the stove has served us very well, but after 35 years, I might put a new on on my Christmas list.

For the price, quality control could be better.
Just received my Mountaineer and love it. “Love it? And only four stars? Why?” 1. The latches don’t latch when stove is in transport mode. They need to be bent with pliers to hold the lid in place but straighten themselves out when used to secure the wind shields. It’s a nerdy-go-round. 2. The grate was poorly cut. It has to be forced into position because it’s not cut square. These are my only two issues straight out of the box.

Alpine II
Follow up to my earlier review. I wrote that you can use a 12” skillet and 6 to 8” skillet at the same time but, you can go bigger. The problem is the windscreen wings aren’t adjustable where they attach to the base of the stove ( like the Coleman gas camp stoves) and depending on pan size you may have no windscreen protection. It’s not a deal breaker but, having two different pan sizes can help. Very good performing and well built stove.

Mountaineer - Aluminum
Heavy duty construction, very pleased with it. I love the windshields on the sides and how they lock in place.

Very happy, so far
Long time Camper, restaurant veteran. Using stove for first time on current trip. Seems very sturdy and well made. Excellent temp control from low to big heat output. Each burners independently controlled and put out full heat range. Easy to clean. It is pretty large, will accommodate larger pans or griddle. Waited a long time for stove to be in stock, disappointed that legs remain out of stock.

Well Designed and Well Constructed
This Mountaineer is well built and sturdily constructed, it should last forever. It folds up and latches closed and the gas hose can be stored inside. When it's set up for use, the side flaps fasten in place and keep the wind off the burners. Two issues prevent me from giving it 5 stars. First, it gets insanely hot. Seriously, who needs a 20, 000 BTU burner on a camp stove? It would make more sense to have a burner that can get down to a true simmer. Second, the gas hose supply would be more practical if there were a convenient extension hose available. As it is, it cannot be directly connected to an RV outlet.

Built Well, Hot As Can Be
I received a recommendation for a Camp Chef Mountaineer from my brother. I couldn't be happier with this piece of camp equipment. It makes cooking a breeze! It's super portable and has a really sturdy construction. We took it out for it's inaugural trip in the woods and it performed so well. When boiling water, you can really tell how much heat it puts out. Easy to control. Simple and sleek aluminum construction. I highly recommend!

Mountaineer Aluminum MS40AX
Gave this five stars because I like it so much. Great combination of how rugged something can be, and still be lite enough to want to take with you. Also good corrosion resistance. Be carefull of the gas connector which is on the bottom if you carry it by the handle. If you set it down in dirt or sand it can clog the gas orifices. Cap it with a piece of plastic bag and rubber band during transport.
