Q: Hi how do they dive and surface?

A: Great question! Follow these instructions for the best results (which can also be found on the back of the box): Step 1: Remove the rubber Periscope-Radar plug on top and submerge the submarine in water. Once properly submerged, remove and pour out the water leaving only the screen grid (where the radar plug goes) damp. Step 2: Loosely fill the Bubble Chamber with Baking Powder NOT Baking Soda and quickly wipe off excess when done. Step 3: Immediately press the Periscope-Radar plug firmly back in place. Step 4: Place the submarine back in the container of water and vigorously shake it a few times underwater, then let go, and watch as the submarine submerges and surfaces on its own! Fun tip - Swirl the water around to watch the sub cruise around underwater.

Retro toy
Had one in 1961 as a child. Parents bought from cereal toy offer. Looks like the one I had. Uses baking powder to create bubbles to rise and sink it.
